New corvette christened with the name "Emden"

05/04/2023By Redaktion

Next milestone for strengthening the German Navy: As the godmother, the new President of the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw), Annette Lehnigk-Emden, today christened the second of a total of five new corvettes of the Class 130 under the name "Emden." The ceremony took place at the Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg.

"I am proud that shortly after my appointment as President of the BAAINBw, I was able to christen this boat as 'Emden.' The high pace already started at the beginning of the contract and the good cooperation of all those involved are the basis for the realization of this project," emphasized Lehnigk-Emden in the presence of Vice Admiral Frank Lenski, the Deputy Inspector of the Navy, and Emden's Lord Mayor Tim Kruithoff. "This is urgently necessary in the face of the much-cited turning point to provide our soldiers with the best possible equipment. I thank all those involved who have contributed to this!"

The corvette "Emden" belongs to the second batch of corvettes 130. It symbolizes the rejuvenation of the fleet. At the same time, the naval forces and their enforcement and survivability are sustainably strengthened. This will allow the corvettes to operate in the future in conjunction with unmanned systems such as the "Future Combat Surface System." With the changing security situation, it is now necessary to demonstrate credible presence and combat power in the North and Baltic Seas.

The corvettes of the Braunschweig class are state-of-the-art, particularly in ship technology as well as weapons and control systems. Many systems on board are automated, and important components are duplicated. Thanks to stealth capabilities, the corvettes are difficult to locate. In addition to their own multi-purpose radar, they benefit from powerful video sensors close to land. They can also deploy helicopter drones, expanding the area they control beyond the radar horizon.
