SIG SAUER:

NGSW gets type classification

05/21/2025By Lawrence

SIG SAUER has announced that the U.S. Army has officially assigned Type Classification - Standard (TC-STD) to the SIG SAUER M7 rifle and M250 belt-fed automatic weapon — cornerstone systems of the U.S. Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) program for small arms modernization and overmatch. The 6.8x51mm M7 and M250 will replace the 5.56x45mm M4 Carbine and M249 Squad Automatic Weapon in the Army's Close Combat Force and superior range and lethality over the weapons they are replacing - delivering what the U.S. Army calls 'overmatch'.

The Type Classification achievement affirms that the M7 and M250 meet the US Army's performance, safety, and reliability standards for military use. Type Classification also ensures seamless integration into the U.S. Army’s inventory, procurement, training, and maintenance across units to satisfy the Army's operational needs.  This milestone marks the transition of these firearms from "X" developmental to "M" standardized status, signifying readiness for widespread fielding.

The NGSW Program, initiated in 2017, aimed to revolutionize small arms capabilities for the U.S. Army. Following a 27-month prototype phase, extensive testing culminated in the selection of SIG SAUER’s XM7 and XM250 in April 2022.
