An AK is simply different from an AR. From the factory, it was never planned for a weapon light to be mounted. There are now several solutions on the market, but none have really convinced us. Yes, you can replace the hand guard, but that usually makes the already relatively heavy weapon even heavier. Last year we discovered the FTCS light mount and we were immediately impressed, then we were able to test it extensively.
What we particularly like is the simple, slim design. It consists of three parts and three screws, five if you count the two for the lamp. The entire mount weighs only 23 g (~0,8 oz), so it’s a real lightweight.
Mounting on the AK is also very simple. First, you have to decide whether you want the lamp on the left or right. Then the lamp mounting plate is screwed onto the bracket, followed by the lamp itself.
Now ergonomics come into play. We wanted to use the pressure button at the end of the lamp. That's why we placed the FTCS mount behind the gas block. If you want your lamp as far forward as possible, the mounting process is even simpler.
Now you just have to screw the lower half to the upper half and you're basically done. What we noticed is that in our case, the included screws were a bit short, but they hold super well. They are standard metric M4 screws, so swapping them out is no problem. We provided our feedback to FTCS.
We particularly appreciate that the cleaning rod can still be carried.
The FTCS light mount is one of the most successful AK accessories, in our opinion. Simple to install, robust, and compatible with all lamps with SUREFIRE Scout hole patterns.
