REVIEW: Claw Gear Mission Sensor

12/15/2014By Redaktion

Operators need more than just the time when they are on the go. Compass, altitude, temperature, etc. are sometimes important mission-critical information. If you want to see all of this packed into one small device, you should take a close look at the Mission Sensor from CLAW GEAR. We have tested it thoroughly and today we will share our experiences with this tactical watch.

When unpacking, one notices the tactical elegance that can also be found in other high-end models on the market. This watch is not a GPS watch, but it does have many extras:

  • Digital compass
  • Altimeter (-706 to +9164 m, stores the last 34 hours)
  • Barometer (with weather forecast)
  • Thermometer (-10° to +60° C, in both °C and °F)
  • Second time zone
  • Alarm function
  • Stopwatch function
  • Countdown timer (1 sec to 100 h)
  • Date display
  • 12/24 hour display
  • Electro-Luminescent Backlight
  • Power saving mode
  • Low Battery Indicator
  • Waterproof up to 30 m

The simpler functions like stopwatch, alarm, timer, etc. work flawlessly and probably do not require further explanation. We will come back to the first four functions in the list later.

missionsensor2The watch is primarily made of plastic, with only the case back made of stainless steel, making it more comfortable to wear. The display is scratch-resistant. We have been using this watch continuously for about four months and have not incurred any significant scratches.

missionsensor1The black inverse display can be read accurately even in the most difficult lighting conditions. If you do need light, the green-glowing backlight preserves your night vision. It won't blind you, and others won't be able to see you as easily.

The operation of the watch is initially not very easy, but you quickly get used to it. The manual (currently only available in English) was necessary for the first setup and sensor calibration, but the process is always similar.

Now, onto the essential functions. The compass works very well, but it should be calibrated first to avoid being led astray. The barometer accurately displays the current air pressure and uses air pressure changes to roughly predict the weather for the next day. The forecast includes "Sunny," "Fair," "Cloudy," and "Rain," and these predictions align well with actual events.

The thermometer also works very well, but for an accurate reading, the watch should be removed from the wrist for about 10 minutes.

We often had to recalibrate the altimeter, but an accuracy of +-5 m is easily achievable. The Track function logs all altitude data, which can then be retrieved.

missionsensor3The rubber strap has a good length and is reinforced at the end (serving as a kind of barb) to prevent the loop from slipping out of the buckle. The buckle is made of anodized metal and holds the watch securely on the wrist.

Oh, before we forget, you can also tell the time with this watch.

CONCLUSION: Great tactical watch with many functions. The only drawback is that with so many functions, it takes a bit longer to familiarize yourself with how to fully utilize the watch. Once you're familiar with it, though, you will greatly appreciate the Mission Sensor.

You can get the CLAW Gear Mission Timer at ARMAMAT for 99.90 Euro.
