Peter R. Neumann is a specialist researcher – he conducts security studies and directs the International Center for the Study of Radicalisation – and Neumann is currently “in vogue.” Whenever there is an attack somewhere, he is often interviewed to explain the background. This book also promises just that: it aims to effectively explain the basics of the current terrorism problem in a readable manner. In essence, it does that and is an engaging read containing dense information. However, maybe the knowledgeable author is aiming a bit low here. At times, the book reads like the manuscript of a seminar. Therefore, it serves as a good introduction for those who are new to the topic; however, those already delving deeper into Islamist terrorism and other forms of violence in Europe may find it lacking.
For the uninitiated, the book covers basics: What role do origins, ideology, and circumstances play? How can prevention be successful? Do “New Jihadists” and “New Right” – an undoubtedly controversial discussion, but newly fueled by Christchurch – mutually fuel each other? Neumann uses the term “Counter-Jihad” to parallel various right-wing groups with jihadists. Fundamentally, this book deals with the banality of terror. Neumann delves into the “homegrown” radicalization, which has become a central societal and security challenge in Europe that we must learn to handle.
