REVIEW:
CAT SM2 Magnet Red Dot - Part 1
02/05/2025

A red dot on the gun is something great. Unfortunately, mounting it on older pistol slides without milling is only possible to a limited extent. We took a detailed look at the CAT SM2 Magnet Red Dot. It allows you to mount a red dot on your pistol with only minimal, reversible modifications.

GLOCK 19 Gen2, it hardly gets any older

The scope of delivery for the CAT 2 includes the red dot sight with 3 MOA dot, plastic cover, the magnetic mount, a rear sight, and a few Allen keys. Of course, an instruction manual is also included. The GLOCK slide is not included, you have to bring your own. In our case, it's a Gen2 GLOCK 19 slide, so quite old.

The CAT SM2 Magnet Red Dot is a classic, open micro red dot. The processing looks high-quality and solid. There is a small button on both sides. These are used to adjust the brightness and turn the red dot on or off. Very simple and functional.

In order for the CAT SM2 Magnet Red Dot to hold on the gun, the rear sight must be replaced. The magnet alone would probably hold as well, but the rear sight serves as a fixed point for the whole system.

The rear sight consists of a plate, three screws, and the actual rear sight. The assembly is simple, but you need some tools. If you're not confident in doing it yourself, we recommend going to your trusted gunsmith. The whole assembly should take no more than 10 minutes.

The sight pusher in action

The special tool is a so-called sight pusher, something that pushes the rear sight out. You can also carefully hammer out the rear sight with a punch and a hammer, but not necessarily recommended.

The installation of the new rear sight is simple. First, slide the plate in and then fix the rear sight with the screws. Align everything centrally and tighten all screws. Screw lock adhesive is a must, as with all optical sights.

The included rear sight has the standard GLOCK height.

It is also equipped with two luminescent dots. Very practical when the lighting conditions are not optimal.

The installation of the CAT SM2 Magnet Red Dot is quick and easy. Place it on the rear sight and tilt it down. The magnet will find its way.

Mounting can be that simple. Due to the magnetic plate, the red dot sits relatively high on the gun. This can be a bit unusual at first to get a clear sight picture, especially if you're used to shooting with iron sights.

The red dot adjustment is done with two Allen screws. The appropriate key is included and also has a second function.

It serves as an additional safety feature. It is inserted from left to right through the mounting plate and the rear sight and stored in a space-saving way. We will test on the shooting range if this is necessary, but a nice feature.

A GLOCK 19 Gen2 with red dot, a rare sight

Conclusion

The CAT SM2 Magnet Red Dot makes a good impression. The sight picture is clear and has a good size. The installation is simple and you don't necessarily need special tools, but it is recommended. Unfortunately, we have not yet made it to the shooting range, but we will post an update then, of course.

We find the concept well solved, as you can mount a regular-sized pistol red dot without having to mill anything. It can also be quickly removed and rear sight and front sight can be used in case of emergency. At first glance, the CAT SM2 Magnet Red Dot convinces us.

The CAT SM2 Magnet Red Dot is available at JTI Trading for 525 euros.
