The Special Forces Command USSOCOM announced that a $48 million deal has been awarded to SIG SAUER. Specifically, this concerns the Suppressed Upper Receiver Group (SURG). The weapon's upper receiver is said to contain an integrated suppressor system. It is called a "system" because the entire upper is designed around it. Otherwise, in firearms where a suppressor is mounted, it is usually not optimized for either the weapon or the ammunition. With SURG, however, everything is finely tuned for optimal performance. This is said to bring improvements in durability, reliability, reduced heat signature, and also a reduction in toxic fumes.
SIG SAUER was able to secure the deal with their system, which is already in use on the MCX platform.
Soldier Systems Daily has already had the opportunity to test the rifle. SURG is mounted on a standard M4 Lower Receiver, providing compatibility with existing systems and saving costs. The suppressor is surrounded by a cage and wrapped in aramid fiber to prevent burns or contact with items that could melt.
Once the project is completed, SIG SAUER Inc. plans to sell the system to civilians as well, at least in America.
For those who want to learn more about the SURG, you can read the article from Soldier System Daily HERE. There is also a PDF from 2017 discussing the tests on SURG. Click HERE for the latest article on SURG from SSD.
