StG77 A1 MOD: Modified assault rifles for the troops

02/17/2023By Redaktion

Today Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner handed over the first modified assault rifles 77 A1 MOD to the troops. The ceremony took place at the Maria-Theresien barracks.

Over the next two years, a total of 14,400 rifles will be issued to both the militia and the cadre presence units. The assault rifle 77 is the standard weapon of Austrian soldiers. It impresses with its simplicity, reliability, and absolute operational suitability. The modifications now carried out allow for better adaptation to individual requirements and increase the effectiveness of each soldier in combat through optimized handling safety and improved targeting at the same time.

The company Steyr Arms (formerly Steyr Mannlicher) is responsible for the modification. The internal implementation of the modification in the army is led by the Army Logistics Center in Klagenfurt together with the weapon technicians and specialists of the troops.

The assault rifle 77 A1 MOD has a new housing with rails for optics, is equipped with Aimpoint Micro and Rheinmetall LLM. The folding front grip has the button for the LLM integrated. Although the old cocking handle is still used, the housing has a recess for it to fold and therefore be break-proof, similar to the Thales assault rifle. The deflector from Steyr is attached at the ejection port.
