The guys from Polenar Tactical investigate this question. In their short video, they shoot at a tree trunk that is approximately 30 cm thick with various calibers and see what the tree can stop. Spoiler alert, rifle calibers penetrate the tree. They also do not use steel-core ammunition with even higher penetration power, but rather normal lead-core ammo.
