The WNDSN Applied Sciences Lab is pleased to announce the release of a collaboration with French knifemaker Fred Perrin, an OSS-inspired coin, based on the WNDSN Eclipse Challenge Coin in heavy metal.
On the front of the coin is the motto of WNDSN Measurement Technology: "ex mensura, scientia" or "knowledge from measurement" and a graphical representation of a lunar eclipse using the ancient alchemical symbol for verdigris and later astronomical symbol for the earth. On the back of the coin - directly on the motif of four quadrants representing a shadow square for solving spatial problems, a set of equal hour lines for time determination, and sinus quadrants as the most elegant mathematical instrument - Fred installs a blade, perfectly fitted into the lines of the coin and in the closed state perfectly flush with the coin surface.
The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) was a United States intelligence agency from 1942 to 1945. One of its main activities was covert intelligence gathering and partisan support, where experiments were conducted with technical innovations in concealed weapons (stabbing and shooting weapons as well as suppressors) and equipment whose actual function should not be immediately recognizable and would not betray the agents in case of a check behind enemy lines.
The OSS Research & Development produced its own range of novel espionage tools and devices, including compasses hidden in uniform buttons, playing cards with hidden knives, a diverse selection of covert knives, as well as coins (in the currency of the respective country of operations) with integrated blades for escape purposes.
WNDSN is located in the city of the spy craft and is strongly influenced by the atmosphere and climate of the Cold War. The roots of WNDSN are inseparably linked to the divided city of Berlin and its flair of competing interests from all over the world.
And here comes Fred Perrin, the famous French knifemaker and designer of concealed weapons, known for his legendary LaGriffe design, a small knife with a ring directly behind the blade for secure grip and control. Fred is a former French elite soldier and a world-renowned martial artist.
Fred has an extensive portfolio of covert tools made in the spirit of the OSS and its siblings in other countries, including a version of the famous "escape coin." Today, many manufacturers produce these coins, but Fred is the first to integrate a thumb stud as his signature into the design that is now almost a hundred years old.
The blade is made of 1095 carbon steel. The coin and hardware, thumb stud, and stop pin are available in raw copper or brass - both materials that beautifully patinate over time.
Quick legal note: We are not sure how this knife harmonizes with the German Firearms Act. Knives can only be purchased directly from Fred Perrin in France. Possession in DE is at your own risk!
Available directly through Fred Perrin
