Last year we introduced you to the Solkoa Survival Systems Sumo Pro Kit. Since we found the contents of that set to be so good, we have now obtained the Solkoa Pro Survival Kit, which is even better equipped. Here is our report.
While the Sumo Pro Kit can be seen more as a compact survival set, the Pro Survival Kit from Solkoa covers the complete range. With almost 1.5 kilos, the set is almost too heavy to carry in a backpack, but of course, the set can be split up or some of the equipment can be integrated into the first line.
Once again, the high quality of the selected products stands out immediately, which we will now discuss in detail.
SIGNAL
The ACR Hot Shot Signal Mirror is a full-sized signaling mirror at approximately 10cm x 7cm and 51 grams. In the middle is a hole through which you "aim" at the rescuer(s). On the back is a corresponding instruction on how to use the mirror. The ACR comes with a yellow cord that also secures a high-frequency signal whistle next to a float.
The mirror set costs around 15 dollars on Amazon USA.
The signal panel is in a highly visible orange color and measures 85cm x 85cm. The corners are reinforced with gray, reflective material that helps to be detected at night as well. Additionally, large eyelets are located at the corners, allowing the cloth to be stretched or used as a bag. A signal panel of this size costs around 30€.
The Petzl E-Lite has long been a fixed part of our basic equipment. This is because it is very compact at 4cm x 3cm x 1.5cm, and the E-Lite weighs only 27 grams with batteries. But that's not all, the clever drawstring and the 360° swiveling lamp head allow the Petzl to function not only as a headlamp but also to be quickly attached to the wrist or other objects to light up your work. It is illuminated by 3 white LEDs, which deliver a maximum of 26 lumens and illuminate up to about 30 meters. In addition, there is a small red LED for preserving night vision and signaling. The modes are switched with a toggle switch next to the LEDs and include weak white light, strong white light, white light flash mode, red light flash mode, and constant red light. There is an off position at both ends, meaning you don't have to go through all the white light modes to get to the red light mode. The lamp is operated with 2 CR2032 batteries, which guarantee a maximum light duration of 70 hours. The E-Lite is also waterproof up to 1 meter, and the manufacturer provides a 10-year warranty. The operating temperature ranges from -30°C to +60°C. The lamp, when purchased separately, costs around 25€.
NAVIGATION
The Suunto A-30L is a professional baseplate compass that has everything you need. On the transparent plate, you will find units for inches and centimeters, a magnifying lens, holes for position marking, and of course, the compass itself. It has a sapphire-lubricated needle and a luminous bezel for use in the dark. The case is robust and waterproof, with a long cord for securing. The Suunto A-30L weighs 32 grams and can be purchased individually for 26€.
The credit card-sized map provides scale calculations for maps, elevation, angle, and ruler for centimeters. A card of this type costs around 3€.
A simple magnifying glass in credit card format for magnifying in case of injuries, reading small print, and making fire with the sun as a heat source. Cost around 1€.
The Pace Cord serves as a pedometer. It has beads on a piece of paracord, divided into 9 beads and 4 beads. For example, you can use these by moving one bead of the nine-row after 100 meters. After 900 meters, all beads are moved. After 1000 meters, you move one bead of the four-row and put all 9 beads back in their original position. This way, you can cover 4 kilometers with the Pace Cord before starting over.
Space Pen & Pencil with Eraser
Writing utensils are always important. The paper can also be used for making fire if nothing else works. A simple Space Pen costs around 20€, waterproof paper around 5€, and a pencil with an eraser is available in any household.
Aloksaks have proven themselves many times in the military and offer 100% waterproofing as well as good protection for the contents, as the bags are very thick. Aloksaks cost between 5€ and 45€, depending on size.
FIRE
A simple magnesium fire starter with striker. The Faststrike costs 10€.
Unfortunately, we were unable to test the Fastfire Tinder, as it was confiscated by customs, but this video demonstrates impressively how well the tabs work even when wet. 4 cubes cost 8$.
This candle in a tin weighing just under 200 grams can be used for cooking, as a heat source under a poncho, or simply as light. An often underestimated survival item. Beeswax candles range from 20-40$, depending on size.
The matches were also confiscated by customs. Such stormproof matches cost around 3.5€ and can be easily replaced in Germany.
