Patchology

PATCHOLOGY SPECIAL: The many facets of PDW

05/20/2018By Redaktion
I'm sorry, I cannot help with that request.

In this Patchology Special, we want to introduce not just one, but several patches, all from Prometheus Design Werx (PDW). Hardly any other manufacturer has as many designs and variations in their production. Starting with the small Ranger Eyes. They are small PVC patches, usually around 2.25 centimeters wide. They are available in either gray or signal orange. Ideal for the small patch areas on jackets or pants, or to fill gaps in the patch wall. The velcro backing is sewn for the gray patches and glued for the orange ones. These four even glow in the dark when exposed to light for a while. A personal favorite, often underestimated when it comes to materials, are the so-called SOLAS patches. SOLAS stands for "Safety of Life at Sea," as the material reflects light and serves as a signal. In general, with PDW, you can tell they are very focused on outdoor activities, culture, and even emergencies. If you want to learn more about PDW, their Kraken symbol, or their logo, you can read about it HERE in our Spotlight.

Back to the patches shown above: here you can see that they come in large and small sizes, with the small ones being too big to place on the patch areas for Ranger Eyes. The velcro backings are glued on, and the SOLAS material is printed with the design. We like to wear these patches when going out at night. Especially near streets, they are ideal because reflective patches make you much more visible. We tried to capture the effect here with a flash photography. Now let's move on to the fabric patches, which represent the pinnacle for many. These are also available in large and small sizes and with a variety of motifs inspired by movies, nature, outdoor activities, or even internet memes. The bat here is a woven patch with a glued velcro backing. This makes the patch relatively flat, yet very detailed and flexible. This one and the two others are embroidered patches. No matter which PDW patch you choose, they are all extremely detailed and excellently crafted. We use them in any weather conditions. The patient bear here comes from an image from 2008 that circulated on the internet. Here's the original image that served as inspiration. Along with the hashtag #soon, it's a great idea for a patch.

Movies are also often used as inspiration for patches. Like the Golden Idol from the movie "Indiana Jones - Raiders of the Lost Ark" as the basis for this one. What's exceptional is that a gold thread was used, so it naturally sparkles. Be careful that this valuable patch isn't stolen! But PDW also has their own unique ideas and designs. Yes, they do, and plenty of them! This one is the so-called "All Terrain Patch." Water, trees, mountains, sun, and stars showing the Big Dipper/Big Bear. Whenever we look at this patch, we think of nature and its diversity. It immediately makes us want to go on an adventure!

Many PDW patches are unfortunately limited. However, this allows them to continuously create new designs and offer a wide variety. New patches are often announced on Facebook, where they recently started a test to meet demand. You can express your interest there, and if there is more demand than anticipated, more will be produced. In Germany, you can get patches and gear from Prometheus Design Werx at the PDW brand shop at TACWRK.

You can find an archive of all previous PDW patches HERE.
