The Bundeswehr has awarded EuroSpike GmbH, a joint venture of Rheinmetall with partners Diehl Defence and Rafael, another contract for the delivery of the modern anti-tank guided missile systems MELLS. 666 missiles and 82 weapon systems have been ordered under the existing framework contract. The order value is approximately 88 million Euros. Rheinmetall will deliver key components to Eurospike, the manufacturer of Multi-Purpose Lightweight Missile Systems (MELLS). Delivery is scheduled between 2022 and 2024.
The fourth batch of MELLS missiles ordered by the Bundeswehr is intended for use by infantry and armored infantry units. Rheinmetall will deliver 82 weapon systems ("Integrated Command and Launch Unit") including transport and storage containers, as well as 666 sets of components for the Spike LR (Long Range) missile manufactured by Rafael. The newly ordered weapon systems of the latest type can already fire the enhanced Spike LR 2 missile. All information about the anti-tank system MELLS.
The framework contract signed in October 2019 included an option for the production and delivery of around 100 weapon systems and a five-digit number of MELLS missiles in the period 2024 to 2031. Overall, this would result in order receipts in a three-digit million Euro range for Rheinmetall.
The MELLS produced by EuroSpike - a joint venture in which Rheinmetall holds 40 percent - is a modern effector of the latest generation. It can be used against armored ground targets at distances of up to 4,000 meters or 5,500 meters (Spike-LR 2).
Rheinmetall has proven expertise in MELLS. The company has already integrated the modern missile into the Marder infantry fighting vehicle and currently in the Puma infantry fighting vehicle. Additionally, integration into the Wiesel air-transportable light armored vehicle is being done by another company.
In the long term, the further networking of weapon systems and missiles with the "Infantryman of the Future - Extended System" also supplied by Rheinmetall via the TacNet command and control system offers potential for the future. This can further optimize the sensor-to-shooter chain. More information on the Panzergrenadier system.
