REVIEW: Helikon-Tex Windrunner Shirt Desert Night Camo

09/17/2021By Redaktion

"It was dark, the moon shone bright on the green-snowy field ..." The classic poem addresses the problem directly: night with night vision used to always be green. And when it's dark and the moon is playing along, you need a very special camouflage: Desert Night Camo! Well, we're not hiding, but the pattern looks great and we have the super practical HELIKON-TEX Windrunner in Desert Night Camo.

Desert Night Camo looks like a green dyed math notebook with spots inside. Here we have the Windrunner zipped up and the hood on.

At the back of the head, the hood can be adjusted precisely.

Overall view from the back. Looks very casual. Returning to the Desert Night Camo: It was issued in Desert Storm 1991 because it was supposedly very effective against the Soviet night vision devices used by the Iraqis. On-site, US soldiers then made the counter-shot and observed the Desert Night Camo through the then standard AN/PVS-5 night vision goggles: it was less well camouflaged than the US Chocolate Chip Desert Camouflage and also worse than the winter cover of the US soldiers. The idea of a nocturnal night vision camouflage was then also abandoned.

That doesn't make the whole thing any less pretty nowadays. The zipper can be opened down to the bottom of the chest.

There are cuffs at the end of the sleeves to prevent anything from getting in.

Mesh is used in the armpits to ventilate well during movement. Otherwise, the Windrunner is made of a light nylon fabric, making it weightless.

From the chest downwards, there is a belly pocket with two side zipped openings on the right and left.

You can simply reach through the belly pocket.

Inside, you can see the shape of the compartment in the material, which is also mesh, allowing you to regulate temperature with open zips when in motion.

The large pocket has two small compartments on the inside, just right for storing your phone.

You can walk down to the lower edge of the pelvis in terms of length.

And with Shock Cord, you can tighten everything here too, so the wind doesn't get in.

There is also a compartment sewn inside, which is particularly useful because the Windrunner "eats itself".

In other words, you can fold the jacket into itself...

...and then you get exactly a small package with which you can perfectly store the Windrunner.

CONCLUSION: The Windrunner from Helikon-Tex is a great windshirt, best quality, well thought out, light, and versatile. It's so compact that it can go anywhere as a handy backup in case the weather gets windy (it's not a rain jacket). We use it for running. And Desert Night Camo as a fashionable statement. Super stylish.
