Photo File: Rheinmetall LLM01

01/17/2012By Redaktion

Light for many European weapons comes from devices other than those we know from American equipment. The Laser and Light Module 01 (LLM01) from Rheinmetall seems to be the most widespread in Europe. In the Photo File on SPARTANAT, we take a look at it from all angles.

The LLM01 (Laser-Light Module) is an adaptive targeting accessory. It is attached to the left side of the main sight carrier on the G36.

The LLM01 offers the following "lighting options":

  • A) White light spotlight, very bright, 6V, comparable to a SureFire flashlight with two batteries
  • B) Non-eye-safe red laser dot, visibility depending on ambient light conditions; well suited for rapid fire. Slightly visible over 150m in twilight.
  • C) IR laser; only visible when using LUCIE or another IR night vision device; practical, as the enemy can find it harder to detect one's position with this (compared to visible laser, Option B), unless they also have IR night vision equipment
  • D) Combination of A&B, suitable for illuminating and determining hold point with red laser dot simultaneously

Activation: The lighting options can be selected on the top of the device using a labeled rotary switch. Activation can be done either by a button directly on the device (also as continuous function), or alternatively by a pressure switch that can be attached at different positions on the weapon using a cable. It is useful to attach it to the top end of the grip (see image) This way, the index finger is free for the trigger, the thumb for the safety lever, and the middle finger for the pressure switch of the LLM01. The weapon can still be handled well.

In a civilian environment, except for the police, it cannot be used in Germany, as all lighting devices on weapons are prohibited by the firearms law.

Special thanks to MILpictures. More information about the LLM can be found at Rheinmetall.
