The prototype of Textron Systems for the Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) program of the US Army has been delivered. This is the first of a total of five prototypes that will be given to the US Army and is based on Cased-Telescoped (CT) Weapons and Ammunition technology from Textron. The goal of the program is to replace the M249 machine gun. Additionally, the entire system is expected to be up to 40% lighter while still increasing the effective range.
In another program awarded to Textron Systems in 2018, the successor to the M4/M4A1 rifle is set to be unveiled in June 2019.
