But not quite. What are we talking about? On June 30, 2021, something happened in the Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) Program of the US Army that no one has noticed so far, including us. Only now has Soldiersystems reported on it. At the end of June, General Dynamics transferred a claim in the NGSW program to LoneStar Future Weapons.
This means that General Dynamics has handed over all its contracts regarding NGSW to this company and is officially no longer part of it. In the background, they will continue to provide consulting services, as after all, the futuristic bullpup rifle is their baby. LoneStar Future Weapons is partnered with True Velocity and their composite case ammunition.
The background of this contract transfer is described by LTC Mark Owens, Project Manager at LoneStar Future Weapons as follows: "Producing something that has never existed before requires a lot of 'different'. Different materials, different manufacturing processes, different weapon and ammunition geometries, and different business relationships and designs. If we maintain the status quo, we cannot provide our forces with compact, 'combat-capable' weapon systems capable of combating current and future threats. We are not different just because we are new. We are different in order to adapt to the rapidly changing battlefields of the future. Every part of our weapon system components and ammunition combines the best traditional technologies of field-proven systems with the deadliest, most robust, most compact, and lightest solutions available to achieve a new, different, higher level of effectiveness."
LoneStar Future Weapons is currently working on the new assault rifle for the US Army and they also intend to work on the new machine gun. They will also develop some rifles with new ammunition for the civilian market. We are curious to see what fruits this endeavor will bear.
