General Dynamics European Land Systems has signed a contract with the Swedish procurement authority (FMV) for the production and delivery of Improved Ribbon Bridge (IRB) bridge systems. Following successful summer and winter tests, the Swedish Army will upgrade some of their existing FSB floating bridges, originally supplied by General Dynamics European Land Systems-Germany, with IRB bridge systems to meet the new requirements of their vehicle fleet.
IRB bridge systems can be operated as a ferry with multiple ramp sections as well as a floating bridge - the video above shows the construction of the IRB by the US Army. IRBs allow tracked vehicles up to MLC 80, including the Swedish Leopard 2 battle tanks, as well as wheeled vehicles up to MLC 96 to cross wide water bodies. The IRB bridge modules are transported and deployed by modernized multipurpose trucks.
IRB bridge systems have already proven successful worldwide in various missions, from peacekeeping to disaster relief operations. The IRB systems are fully interoperable with the existing floating bridge systems from General Dynamics European Land Systems, including the Floating Support Bridge, the Standard Ribbon Bridge (SRB), and the amphibious bridge and ferry system M3. The delivery of the first systems to Sweden is planned for 2020. More information about the IRB System.
