The Ukrainian military uses decoys to mislead the enemy and protect weapons from air threats, such as Lancet Loitering Munitions. Wooden copies of HIMARS and reflectors are employed to distract drone operators and create the impression of hits on fake targets.
Threats from the air can also be avoided by tricking the enemy into targeting the wrong line. To protect as many weapons as possible, the Ukrainian military also uses tank and howitzer decoys. This is necessary to confuse the Russians and prevent damage to weapons, especially from Lancet Loitering Munitions, which seem to be quite effective when used. According to an article in The Economist, the Ukrainian forces also have a whole fleet of wooden copies of HIMARS installed on heavy trucks to distract from their high-value targets. Reflectors are installed in the inflatable dummies to mislead the drone operators directing the fire, creating the impression that a projectile has hit the tank.
