From Wndsn Messtechnik, there is now a new version of the popular Wndsn Telemeter. After more than a thousand units sold, the Wndsn Quadrant-Telemeter will be available in early 2020 in a white version with high contrast and good readability with new features.

The Wndsn Quadrant-Telemeter - HERE in our review - is a measuring and computing instrument for indoor and outdoor use; its users desire features such as robustness, durability, and integrity of the various scales. For black and transparent instruments, Wndsn uses cast acrylic, which reliably operates under these requirements and is deeply engraved.

To improve readability without sacrificing durability, a new material has been selected after various tests on readability, durability, and resistance of different surfaces: an acrylic sandwich consisting of a black core and matte white outer surfaces that are pierced by engraving to expose the underlying black material for high contrast and abrasion-resistant scales (a requirement that prohibits simple printing of the scales).

Additional new and updated features of the Wndsn High-Viz Quadrant-Telemeter include:

  1. A 100 MIL marking on the angular size scale; a special value for different distance calculations
  2. Another scale that is equally easy to overlook; this is also located on the angular size scale and is at 7.5°. The astronomers among the Wndsn users have requested this marking for naked-eye observation. 7.5° corresponds to 30 minutes of Earth rotation, and the marking can be used against a fixed star to measure time.
  3. The slope/tangent scale on the quadrant side has been revised and redesigned according to the updated Wndsn standards for logarithmic scales. The result is a refined scale with higher precision and better readability.

The Wndsn Quadrant-Telemeter is an observation instrument for the naked eye for measuring angles using various input and sighting methods. Additionally, the Quadrant-Telemeter is a graphical, analog computer that provides functions for direct processing or conversion of the captured values.

Scales on the Wndsn Quadrant Telemeter:

  • Angular size and distance
  • Height or depth of an object
  • Calculating sine, cosine, and tangent from a specific angle and back
  • Degree and slope quadrant
  • Shadow square
  • Inclinometer

The various engraved scales allow the user to transfer measurements from the real world to a small ruler in their hand and read the corresponding distances directly from the instrument. In this way, any navigation distances and other interesting information about the world around us can be calculated as long as a triangle can be formed between the user, scales, and object.

The credit card-sized instrument is handcrafted in Germany and made in the spirit of astronomical instruments from the Renaissance built by Tycho Brahe, Johannes Kepler, Galileo Galilei, and Gemma Frisius. The scales are laser-engraved and precisely cut into 3 mm thick black acrylic with white matte surfaces. The Wndsn logo is present on the device. Scientific hints are engraved and supplemented with a printed manual in English and German. A 240-page printed manual is included as a PDF and is available separately from Wndsn or through bookstores.
