We present: the coconut cannon

03/15/2017By Redaktion

Fruits are usually not our thing, cannons more so. When both come together in an art project because this weapon is supposed to be fired in the cold polar region, however, that is (almost) already a mandatory topic. Unfortunately, the Berlin police beat us to it. From them comes this amusing article:

As bizarre as the following matter may be, it is extremely important to us to emphasize the danger and recklessness of this case.

The dog owner, who urgently alerted us last week during his walk on an industrial site in Bessemerstr. in Schöneberg, is certainly still shaken up by the incident.

According to our initial findings, the 38-year-old man was walking his dog on March 1st around 8:30 p.m. across the grassy area of the courtyard when suddenly there was a loud bang and a spherical projectile - a coconut as it turned out to be - flew past him and hit a lamppost.
He noticed a group of about 10 male and female students, by some sort of cannon. Our team from the 44th precinct was quite surprised. They were greeted with a sight of a metal coconut cannon. The self-built cannon, approximately 5 meters long and 2 meters high, is capable of shooting objects with strong compressed air. A special construction with an air pressure tank including a pressure gauge provides the necessary energy. The metal barrel covered with papier-mâché is designed to look like a coconut palm trunk.

A 23-year-old artist took responsibility for the construction with our colleagues, claiming that he built it with other students. Since the device was supposed to be shipped to Antarctica the next day for an art project, it was tested on the courtyard of the property. Unfortunately, no barriers or other safety precautions were considered.

Our team confiscated the cannon, had it transported by our Technical Operations Unit, and initiated an investigation. The Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office is now investigating for violation of the Weapons Act.

There is certainly a lot of creativity in the coconut cannon project - but it didn't take much for the dog owner to not only come away with a scare that evening.
