Additional mobile rescue stations

The medical care of injured soldiers is the core mission of the medical service of the Bundeswehr. On July 13, 2026, the President of the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw), Annette Lehnigk-Emden, commissioned the supplier Rheinmetall Project Solutions GmbH (RhPS) to deliver 149 additional mobile rescue stations.

The rescue stations are part of the large project Modular Medical Facilities (MSE). The MSE consists of container-based, mobile treatment facilities. They will significantly contribute to ensuring that injured soldiers receive the medical care they need throughout the entire rescue chain.

The newly ordered rescue stations are part of the MSE and represent the NATO treatment level 1. This level follows directly after self- and buddy aid and focuses on emergency medical care. Specifically, this means maintaining and securing vital functions as well as preparing or stabilizing for further transport. There is also the possibility of performing initial emergency surgical interventions (e.g., surgical wound treatment). Thus, the new stations will be the first point of contact for injured soldiers. The acute care provided there is crucial for saving lives, as evidenced by the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Each mobile rescue station consists of two containers, a connection element, and the necessary transport component. All necessary medical devices are carried within the rescue station. Therefore, the rescue station, along with its personnel, can be transported, set up, operated, dismantled, and moved to the next deployment site in a very short time. This allows the medical service to immediately follow the fighting troops.

The new order is a call-off from the framework contract concluded in 2024 between the BAAINBw and the company RhPS. With the conclusion of the contract, 16 rescue stations were already definitively ordered. The call-off for an additional 149 rescue stations has now been approved. 112 of these stations are ballistically protected—against gunfire and shrapnel effects.

The new call-off is a milestone in the regeneration of the Bundeswehr's rescue stations. The stations currently in use were procured in the early 2000s. They will now be gradually replaced by the new stations by the end of 2029. The Budget Committee of the German Bundestag approved the call-off of the framework contract on July 8, 2026.
