Our friends from the Polish magazine FRAG OUT had the opportunity to get their hands on one of the first .223 Rem GROT S16 FB-M1: here it is, the long-awaited civilian version of the new Polish MSBS/GROT assault rifle The GROT has been in use by the Polish Armed Forces since 2017 - we reported directly from Poland on this. Now, the manufacturer Fabryka Broni Łucznik-Radom has announced that the semi-automatic version in 5.56×45 NATO is now available for sale.
The GROT S16 FB-M1 shown here is from the first series of 500 semi-automatic rifles. Whether this will be enough to cover more than just Polish pre-orders, we do not know at the moment. The first 100 units, in turn, were limited in remembrance of Poland's regained independence in 1918. With specially laser-engraved markings and a certificate, the "Limited Edition" will likely appeal to Polish customers. Each of these rifles has a Polish White Eagle engraved on the right side of the upper receiver.
The semi-automatic GROT S16 FB-M1 comes with a side-folding stock, Magpul M-LOK slots in the handguard (with official M-LOK license), three short MIL-STD-1913 rails, folded BUIS, Magpul MOE handguard, green translucent polymer 30-round magazine, cleaning kit, manual, and a warranty card. The rifle is factory packed in anti-corrosion film (previously the weapons were packed in paper, but now in Poland the future has arrived) and comes with a hard case.
What are the differences between the civilian GROT S16 FB-M1 and the military GROT C16 FB-M1, other than it being a semi-automatic? Instead of the military selector switch with "Safe-Single-Full Auto," the semi-automatic has a two-position selector switch (Safe & Single, at a 90-degree rotation). The logos are stamped, not painted. The rifle is ambidextrous. The M-LOK handguard mentioned above has four attachment slots at positions 3, 5, 6, 7, and 9 o'clock, and three at 2 and 11 o'clock. The 16" MIL-SPEC quick-change barrel with a 1:9 twist ends in a 1/2-28-UNEF-2A thread, allowing owners to easily change their flash hider. The version adopted by the Polish Army, on the other hand, has a muzzle brake that can only be removed by a gunsmith. The civilian rifle is compatible with .223 Rem and 5.56×45 rounds.
The civilian version of the rifle does not have a bayonet mount. Since the bayonet on the military rifle is attached to a latch and directly to the muzzle brake, mounting is not possible on the S16 FB-M1. The location of the QD sling attachment points has been changed based on feedback from military users.
There have been some changes to the interior of the rifle as well, in addition to the absence of "full auto." The bolt group has been modified, and there is a missing tab on the star. The S16 FB-M1 trigger works differently as well, it is not MIL-SPEC but rather a match trigger. The trigger reset is quite long, so no rapid double taps. Unfortunately, the trigger group is not modular and cannot be replaced without significant modification to the rifle.
On the way back from the FB Radom factory, we made a quick detour to the shooting range to take a closer look at the weapon. Well, it shoots very similarly to the military rifle. It remains stable during shooting, is completely ambidextrous, and has the mentioned 90-degree selector switch. The switch has quite a strong resistance, but we hope it will soften soon. There was a bit of wobble in the folding stock. We also used cheap ammunition, but there were no malfunctions. According to the manual, the S16 FB-M1 is compatible with almost all STANAG magazines, except for the Magpul PMAG M3. In the coming days and months, we will see how the rifle performs as we rigorously test it.
