Vortex: Optics prototype for the NGSW program

04/22/2020By Redaktion

Vortex Optics delivers series production prototypes of an optic for the Next Generation Squad Weapon Fire Control (NGSW-FC) for further evaluations under the US Army program "PM Soldier Lethality."

As a target optic, the 1-8×30 Active Reticle™ Fire Control provides everything you would expect from a variable power, first focal plane riflescope. However, when augmented with an overlaid digital display, it offers features that have never before been seen in a traditional infantry weapon optic.

“As a veteran-owned, non-traditional defense company, it is very important to us that we listen to our soldiers,” said Sam Hamilton, Chief Technical Officer at Vortex Optics. The Vortex Optics 1-8×30 Active Reticle™ Fire Control is based on revolutionary technology grounded in years of research and development and collaborative efforts with the Army's PM-Soldier Weapons Group. The end result is the Active Reticle™, which has been proven to increase hit probability and reduce time to engagement.

Hamilton added: “By combining a 1-8 power scope with first focal plane reticle, an etched reticle, a 1,000m laser rangefinder, state-of-the-art onboard ballistic computer, a suite of atmospheric sensors, and a programmable active matrix microdisplay overlaid in the first focal plane, Active Reticle™ delivers a true multi-purpose optic that enables everything from CQB to precision riflescope techniques within the range of the NGSW. In case of battery failure, soldiers still have a 1-8 power scope that surpasses the performance of current optics.”

For soldiers in the field, this provides the freedom to focus entirely on the task at hand. Sam Hamilton on the unique benefits of the new Vortex optic: “Shooters no longer need to divert their field of view to read separate range finders or ballistic computers, which has slowed them down and impaired their situational awareness.”
