Germany is procuring ELCAN Specter DR and wants a new assault rifle in the old caliber 5.56. In other parts of the world, people are already thinking ahead. The US Army, through the Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) program, is looking for a new future and superiority on the battlefield of tomorrow: new cartridges, new rifles, new optics. The decision has now been made on the optics, and VORTEX can look forward to a billion-dollar contract: The US Army has awarded Sheltered Wings Inc. d/b/a Vortex Optics based in Barneveld, WI, a 10-year fixed-price contract (Follow-on Production Other Transaction Agreement, P-OTA) with a maximum value of $2.7 billion for the production and delivery of up to 250,000 XM157 Next Generation Squad Weapons - Fire Control (NGSW-FC) systems over a period of 10 years.
The Vortex Optics 1-8×30 Active Reticle™ Fire Control offers revolutionary technology based on years of research and development, as well as collaborative development efforts with the Army's PM-Soldier Weapons Group. The end result is the Active Reticle™, which significantly improves hit accuracy while reducing the time to fire.
So what is the "do-it-all" block? The magic lies in the combination of various technical elements that work together to make the weapon highly efficient: There is a 1-8x scope with first focal plane reticle, an etched reticle, a 1,000m laser rangefinder, a state-of-the-art ballistic computer on board, and atmospheric sensors. All of this comes together in a programmable Active Matrix Microdisplay overlaid in the first focal plane. Active Reticle™ provides a genuine multi-purpose optic, enabling everything - from CQB to long-range shooting techniques - within the range of the NGSW.
In case of a battery failure, soldiers still have a 1-8x scope, a Short Dot, which exceeds the performance of current optics. But the norm will be the new freedom for shooters to focus entirely on the essentials. No one needs to leave their field of view to read separate rangefinders or ballistic computers. They remain fully capable and have superior optics, which, combined with a completely new weapon with powerful ammunition, guarantees superiority.
A decision for the future, now the choice of the weapon must follow: NGSW has three candidates, next summer it should be clear who will deliver the new assault rifle and the new light machine gun of the Americans with which ammunition solution.
