STATIVKUGELKOPF: From art to weapon

10/01/2023By Redaktion

The evolution of the tripod ball head from its beginnings in photography to its use as a weapon mount is a fascinating journey marked by innovation, versatility, and adaptation. What started as a tool to revolutionize how photographers captured moments seamlessly transitioned into a critical aid for achieving precision and control in firearms. KJI has dedicated itself intensively to this adaptation. We introduced the KJI K800 to you in detail HERE.

Origins in Photography

The tripod ball head was introduced in the world of photography as a revolutionary solution to provide photographers with more flexibility and freedom of movement. Traditional tripod heads limit the range of movement and adjustments, often requiring cumbersome settings to capture shots from different angles. The ball head, emerging in the mid-20th century, features a ball joint that allows smooth and intuitive movements in practically any direction. This groundbreaking innovation quickly gained popularity among photographers by simplifying setup and camera angle adjustments.

Interest from Shooters

The concept of tripod ball heads soon found application beyond photography. The adaptability and stability offered by ball heads attracted the attention of shooters looking for better ways to mount and stabilize weapons in various shooting scenarios.

Manufacturers recognized the advantages of the ball head design and began adapting and improving these mechanisms for use with firearms, modifying the ball head concept to withstand large calibers. This adaptation allowed for quick and precise weapon alignment, making them invaluable for precision shooting and tactical use. This development marks the transition of tripod ball heads from their exclusive use in photography to an essential component of firearm equipment.

Many ball heads today are designed to support weights of 30 to 60 kilograms, but most use the Arca-Swiss mounting system (a legacy from photography), and while it is still preferred by shooters for their rifles at long distances, it can be limiting as they cannot mount their normal stocks on it. Tripod manufacturer KJI recognized some drawbacks of the ball head concept from the beginning and decided to build upon this concept.

Precision and Fine Adjustment

Using a ball head can make it challenging to make precise adjustments for framing or aiming, especially at high magnifications or micro-adjustments. Most ball heads do not allow for smooth but rapid movements. And while they enable versatile movements in multiple axes, there are limitations in panoramic rotation. Some ball heads do not even allow for a smooth and continuous panning movement. In contrast, the KJI Direct Mount Adapter securely holds the rifle on the tripod, while the Direct Mount Adapter simply screws onto the tripod's swiveling center column, allowing for smooth 360° panning and a tilt range of 109°.

Creep and Drift

Over time, the weight of mounted equipment can cause the ball head to slowly change its position, known as "creep" or "drift." This can be problematic in applications requiring a constant and stable shooting position. To address this issue, KJI equipped the rail system with a tilt angle of up to 11°, allowing the user to lock and level their equipment, ensuring it remains steady during use.

Easy Cleaning

Cleaning a ball head can be a difficult and unpleasant task, especially in environments where dirt easily accumulates between the ball and the body. Often, the entire head needs to be disassembled to remove dust and particles that can hinder smooth movement.

The cleaning process requires the use of various tools for disassembly and cleaning itself. To solve this problem, KJI has introduced a more practical solution: the removable bolt cover in the mounting system. With this innovation, it is easy to remove dirt that has become trapped in the saddle clamp. Simply rotate and release the bolt and control arm, remove the head casing from the hinge block, and clean the interior with a cloth - all without any additional tools!

The commitment of KJI to the advancement of the ball head speaks for itself and for the brand's commitment to addressing the real challenges faced by shooters. With their innovative approach, KJI has shown that it is possible to overcome boundaries, improve precision, stability, and user-friendliness, and thus shape the future landscape of shooting equipment. Nevertheless, ball heads will continue to coexist with the latest innovations in the firearms industry - whether they continue to be used or whether shooters ultimately switch to a cleaner, more reliable, and easier-to-use tripod mount will ultimately depend on the preferences of the shooter.
