The State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Berlin has been and remains a peculiar and controversial special case among the state agencies for the protection of the constitution. Due to the special status of West Berlin, the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution was officially under the authority of the Allies. After several scandals, the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Berlin was incorporated into the Ministry of the Interior of the Senate.
But where does the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution stand in the eyes of Berlin politics today? Its abolition was demanded in the NSU trial, while Berlin needs special protection as a target of terrorists and as the capital of spies. A balancing act between freedom and security, between intelligence services, police, and politics.
So where does the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Berlin come from and where is it heading? This will be discussed by the State Secretary for the Interior, Torsten Akmann, and the Member of the Bundestag, Renate Künast, at the German Spy Museum. Both have firsthand experience with the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Berlin: As State Secretary, Torsten Akmann is responsible for the Senate Department of the Interior Division II (Protection of the Constitution); as a member of the Berlin House of Representatives, Renate Künast oversaw the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in the Senate Committee.
An exciting evening on the security policy of the capital is guaranteed. The event will be moderated by the journalist Alfred Eichhorn.
