The U.S. Army is looking for a new infantry fighting vehicle to accompany the M1A2 Abrams into battle. The vehicle is intended to replace the M2A3 Bradley and provide space for a squad. We introduce you to the three vehicles competing for the "Next Generation Combat Vehicle," as the Army calls it.
The CV90 Mk.IV is the newest vehicle from the proven CV90 family. Developed for the Swedish army in the 1990s, the CV90 was equipped with a 40mm cannon and could accommodate eight soldiers. The Mk.IV variant has been thoroughly redesigned and modernized. The infantry fighting vehicle now features a 35mm cannon, two anti-tank missiles, thermal imaging technology, a learning AI, and an 840 horsepower engine.
Rheinmetall and Raytheon have joined forces to create an entirely new vehicle. The Lynx K41 can be equipped with either a 30 mm automatic or a 35 mm cannon and also brings anti-tank missiles into battle. It features active defense systems designed to intercept incoming projectiles and missiles before they can pose a threat to the vehicle. Additionally, the infantry fighting vehicle is equipped with the Coyote drone system. The 50-ton vehicle accommodates 9 soldiers and is powered by a 1,050 horsepower diesel engine. A modular weapon system design is intended to facilitate adaptation to future developments.
The most striking feature of the Griffin III is its 50 mm cannon, which can elevate almost vertically (85 degrees). This makes it ideal for engaging high targets in urban terrain. The weapon is also capable of automatically aligning itself with the source of incoming fire. The Griffin III is the smallest of the three candidates: it can only accommodate six soldiers.
