Tear gas may look romantic from afar, but it can have serious consequences when directly exposed. This article provides tips on how to protect yourself if affected by tear gas, including leaving the scene, staying calm, and washing with water or milk.
It may look romantic when the fumes of tear gas move across a square. But it is not. Especially not when you are directly affected by tear gas, either because you are where you shouldn't be, or because an attacker sprays it directly in your face. Those who have seen too many movies may know that you can use a wet bandana or scarf as a filter or tie it around your face. This is incorrect. Because modern tear gas not only irritates the lungs, but also irritates the eyes and skin.
If you are affected, try to leave the scene as quickly as possible. Stay calm and breathe through your nose in short breaths. Never rub your eyes or skin, as it can have serious consequences (up to chemical burn symptoms). Rinse off and wash with pure water as soon as possible. It can also be helpful to wash your eyes with milk.
