For the future-oriented alignment of the German Armed Forces and to meet the increasing requirements, the Space Command of the German Armed Forces was put into service on July 13, 2021 in Uedem. It primarily serves to consolidate the existing expertise and capacities of the organizational areas Cyber and Information Space and Air Force. At the same time, it is intended to be expanded with new capabilities. The Space Command is a central point of contact for multinational partners and helps improve communication among all stakeholders.
To achieve this, the German Armed Forces work closely with the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Under the aspect of "Leadership for the Space Domain from a Single Source," the creation of the space situation, planning and conducting space operations, and controlling military space systems are continuous tasks of the German Armed Forces.
Since the establishment of the Space Situation Center in 2009, a lot has happened. What started with three soldiers has now become a joint department with currently 80 military and civilian employees. In the future, there are plans to have up to 250 in Uedem.
For example, collision and proximity warnings are issued when satellites come dangerously close to each other on their orbits. What could mean the destruction of a satellite in a collision with space debris, might be espionage in the case of satellites from other nations. Therefore, the Space Command is also tasked with protecting and, if necessary, defending the German Armed Forces' space systems. National and international partners are also supported upon request. In the USA, there is already the "Space Force" as a new branch. Some ironic people suggest the motto "We come in Peace" for the German Space Command.
