Ukraine: Women in High Heels

Is the footwear in the picture sexist? In Ukraine, the lead-up to a parade sparks discussions. The female soldiers above are actually practicing for the event. It is unclear who came up with the idea to switch from combat boots to high heels. Although it can also be debated whether the shoes in the picture are pumps and not high heels. Regardless: Probably the shoe change is meant to show that the women, even as soldiers, have remained women. However, the shoe as an accessory to the uniform could also indicate that Eastern Europe sometimes simply ticks differently.

In the Ukrainian army, there are more than 31,000 women, including over 4,100 officers. More than 13,500 Ukrainian women have fought against pro-Russian separatists in the East of the country since the beginning of the armed conflict seven years ago, according to Parliament President Kondratyuk.
