Russian authorities have reportedly targeted the European arms industry leaders in an assassination attempt to disrupt Western support for Ukraine and destabilize NATO. Russian authorities are said to have attempted to assassinate leading representatives of the European arms industry, presumably as part of Russia's efforts to disrupt and deter Western support for Ukraine, as well as broader Russian efforts to destabilize NATO members.
CNN reported on July 11 that five American and other Western officials said US intelligence agencies had uncovered a Kremlin plan to assassinate the CEO of the German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, Armin Papperger, in early 2024. The US intelligence service informed the German government, which was able to thwart the plan.
