UKRAINE: THE SITUATION 818 - JUNE 9, 2024

The Biden administration's limited shift in policy allowing Ukraine to target Russian military sites on Russian soil has only slightly weakened Russian defenses. Further action is needed to significantly impact Russian operations. Recent reports suggest Ukrainian forces have successfully struck Russian assets. The limited about-turn of the Biden administration, allowing Ukraine to attack Russian military targets on Russian territory with US-supplied weapons, has eliminated no more than 16 percent of Russian territorial protection - a small area along the Russian-Ukrainian border.

The change in US policy is a step in the right direction, but on its own it is inadequate and unable to significantly disrupt Russian operations. According to ISW's assessment, the West is still able to disrupt Russian operations on a large scale by allowing Ukraine to attack Russia's operational hinterland and deep areas on Russian territory with Western-supplied weapons.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces reportedly struck a Russian Su-57 fighter jet at the Akhtubinsk airfield in the Astrakhan region between June 7 and 8.

Ukrainian forces may have sunk a large Russian landing or patrol boat near Yeysk in the Krasnodar region overnight from June 8 to 9.
