Israel's success in defending against large-scale Iranian missile and drone attacks from Iranian territory on April 13 highlights the weaknesses that Ukrainian efforts to defend against regular Russian missile and drone attacks face due to Ukrainian geography and the continuous degradation of the Ukrainian air defense shield.
The Iranian missile-drone attack on Israel on April 13 was most likely aimed at causing significant damage, but it fell below the threshold that would trigger a massive Israeli response. The attack was designed for success, not failure. The attack package was modeled after the one the Russians have repeatedly used with great success against Ukraine. The attack caused less damage than expected, probably because the Iranians underestimated the significant advantages that Israel has over Ukraine in defending against such attacks. The Iranians will learn from this attack and work to improve their capabilities over time to penetrate Israeli defenses, just as the Russians have done with their repeated series of attacks against Ukraine.
