The Ukrainian defense has halted Russian advances, preventing encirclement near Rubizhne. Russian failed attacks in eastern Ukraine suggest Ukrainian forces are effectively countering Russian offensives in various cities.
The Ukrainian defense has largely halted Russian advances in eastern Ukraine. Russian troops carried out a series of unsuccessful attacks in eastern Ukraine on May 4 and failed to make any confirmed advances. It is becoming increasingly unlikely that Russian troops attacking south of Izyum can successfully encircle Ukrainian forces in the area of Rubizhne. Ukrainian forces have so far prevented Russian forces from combining their offensives southeast of Izyum and west of Lyman, Slovyansk, and Kramatorsk, as the Russians likely intended.

Russian troops reportedly stormed the Azovstal Steel Plant on May 4 and are likely operating within the plant's facilities.
Russian and Ukrainian sources have confirmed that a Ukrainian counteroffensive has pushed Russian troops back 40 kilometers from the city of Kharkiv.
