Russian forces are using improved glide bombs in attacks in Ukraine, converting unguided bombs into guided ones. Ukrainian military spokesperson confirmed the use of UMPB D-30SN bombs mistaken for S-300 missiles. Russian milbloggers claim use of UMPB-FAB glide bombs in recent attacks.
A Ukrainian military spokesperson has confirmed that Russian forces are conducting attacks with improved glide bombs in Ukraine.
The spokesperson for the Ukrainian Tavriisk unit, Captain Dmytro Lykhovyi, reported on March 10 that Russian forces in Myrnohrad (Donetsk region) had used three guided glide bombs of the type UMPB D-30SN (Universal Interspecific Glide Munition), which were originally mistaken by Ukrainian forces for S-300 missiles. Lykhovyi explained that the improved UMPB D-30SN glide bombs essentially convert the unguided FAB gravity bombs from the Soviet era into guided glide bombs. Russian forces had not used unguided glide bombs until January 2024. ISW recently observed Russian milbloggers claiming that Russian forces have started conducting attacks with guided UMPB-FAB glide bombs in unspecified areas of Ukraine, as opposed to unguided glide bombs with Unified Planning and Correction Modules (UMPC).
