UKRAINE: THE SITUATION 592 - OCTOBER 6, 2023

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have continued their counterattacks near Bakhmut and advanced into the western Zaporizhzhia Oblast on October 6.

According to Ukrainian military sources, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have continued their successful offensive south of Bakhmut near Andriivka (8 km southeast of Bakhmut). Geolocated images published on October 5 show that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have advanced to the tree line between Robotyne and Verbove, approximately 6 km southeast of Robotyne.

The spokesperson for the Eastern Group of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Captain Ilya Yevlash, explains that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are preparing for offensive operations throughout the autumn and winter period. Yevlash emphasizes that the Ukrainian Armed Forces will continue the fight in winter, even if logistical needs increase and rain and fog could hinder the use of drones and tactical and military aviation. Yevlash's statement confirms ISW's longstanding assessment that weather will not prevent either side from conducting offensive operations in winter 2023/2024 if they are well supplied and choose to do so, as was the case in winter 2022.
