UKRAINE: THE SITUATION 41 - 31 MARCH 2022

The Ukrainian armed forces carried out several local counterattacks around Kyiv, in northeastern Ukraine, and towards Kherson on March 31, successfully putting pressure on Russian forces and attempting to disrupt ongoing Russian troop rotations.

The Ukrainian armed forces northwest of Kyiv pushed back Russian forces north of the E-40 highway and are likely to attack the towns of Bucha and Hostomel held by the Russians in the coming days. The Ukrainian armed forces took advantage of the limited Russian withdrawal east of Brovary to recapture territory in the Kyiv and Chernihiv oblasts. In the last 24 hours, the Ukrainian armed forces likely also carried out counterattacks towards Sumy, although ISW cannot independently confirm these reports. Finally, the Ukrainian armed forces conducted limited counterattacks in the northern Kherson oblast. Russian forces have only carried out offensive operations in Donbass and against Mariupol in the last 24 hours, and have not made major advances.
