UKRAINE: THE SITUATION 337 - 24 JANUARY 2023

A coalition of NATO member states is reportedly sending modern combat tanks to Ukraine.

On January 24th, the "Wall Street Journal" reported that US President Joe Biden is preparing to deliver a "significant number" of Abrams M1 tanks to Ukraine, and that the White House may announce the delivery as early as January 25th. The German newspaper "Der Spiegel" reported on January 24th that Chancellor Olaf Scholz has decided to deliver at least one company of tanks (14 tanks) of Leopard 2 combat tanks to Ukraine in an unspecified period of time. Following Germany's decision, Poland is likely to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.

Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak announced on January 24th that Poland has officially requested permission from Germany to send Polish Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated that Berlin would not interfere if Poland wanted to deliver its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. British officials confirmed on January 16th that the United Kingdom will deliver 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron stated on January 22nd that France does not rule out sending Leclerc tanks to Ukraine.
