UKRAINE: THE SITUATION 27 - 17 March 2022

The Russian forces have not made major advances and the Ukrainian forces conducted several local counterattacks on March 17. The Russian forces have only made small territorial gains and continue to deploy reserve forces, including the 1st Guard Tank Army and the 810th Marine Infantry Brigade.

The Russian forces continue to suffer heavy losses in the area of Kharkiv, and Russian attempts to bypass the city of Izyum are unlikely to succeed. The Russian forces continued their attacks on Mariupol on March 17, but did not make any further successful advances from Crimea.

Attacks on Mariupol continued from the east and west on March 17. The General Staff reports that Russian forces are engaged in the "total destruction of civilian infrastructure, homes, and livelihoods." Mariupol is a urban area confined battle.
