UKRAINE: THE SITUATION 100 - MAY 29, 2022

Ukrainian forces successfully carried out a limited counterattack near the Kherson and Mykolaiw regions, disrupting Russian efforts to establish defensive positions in the south. While this counterattack may not regain significant territory immediately, it is likely to hinder Russian operations and potentially force them to redeploy reinforcements.

According to new reports, on May 28, the Ukrainian Armed Forces conducted a successful limited counterattack near the border between the Kherson and Mykolaiw regions, pushing the Russian forces there into a defensive position. This Ukrainian counterattack is likely aimed at disrupting Russian efforts to establish strong defensive positions along the southern axis.

Although the Ukrainian counterattack is unlikely to reclaim significant territory in the near future, it will likely disrupt Russian operations and may force Russia to redeploy reinforcements to the Kherson region, which is predominantly held by subpar units. Ukrainian counterattacks could further slow down Russian efforts to consolidate administrative control over the occupied southern Ukraine.

The Russian forces continue their efforts to gain full control of Severodonetsk.

The Russian forces are continuing their offensives southeast of Izyum, but have not made confirmed advances towards Slovyansk.

The Russian forces continue their offensive operations to disrupt Ukrainian Ground Lines of Communication (GLOCs) northeast of Bakhmut, but it seems unlikely they will attempt a direct assault on the city.
