Some claim that a modern combat helmet is no use on the current battlefield because it cannot withstand rifle calibers. This may be true, but in a war like the one currently in Ukraine, a lot more is flying through the air at extreme speeds than just projectiles. Shrapnel and debris can also be deadly. Here a helmet stopped a grazing shot or shrapnel to the dome. The force was so great that even the outer shell was ripped away.

Here is another example of a hit by shrapnel on the helmet. The helmet rail is no longer present in the lower area, the helmet cover was torn apart by the force, and the aramid is exposed at the point of penetration. The wearer nearly survived the collision with the shrapnel unharmed, but without the helmet, the outcome would likely have been different.
