Two New PATRIOT Fire Units

The Bundeswehr is enhancing its air defense with the procurement of two PATRIOT fire units, intended to replace those sent to Ukraine. Additionally, new operational maintenance containers will modernize equipment from the 1980s, ensuring the system's mobility and operational capability during global deployments.

Ground-based air defense is of central importance for the protection of military forces and critical infrastructure. A key component is the PATRIOT air defense system, which was introduced to the Bundeswehr in 1989 and has been continuously modernized ever since. Now, the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology, and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) has signed a contract for the procurement of two PATRIOT fire units to replace systems transferred to Ukraine. In addition, new operational containers for system maintenance have been ordered. The Budget Committee of the German Bundestag approved the procurements on October 14, 2026.

A PATRIOT fire unit consists of a radar system, a command post, several launchers, and other components, including power supply systems. With this replacement procurement, the Bundeswehr will receive replacements for the PATRIOT fire units that were transferred to Ukraine in August 2025 to defend against Russia’s war of aggression. In addition to the complete fire units, the scope of delivery also includes maintenance services and spare parts packages.

The operational containers, which were also ordered, will replace maintenance equipment dating from the late 1980s. They are intended to help maintain the air defense system’s maintainability even during global deployments. The new maintenance equipment is fully containerized and can be transported and operated on trucks already in service with the Bundeswehr. This increases its mobility and enables flexible deployment.

Rainer F., the project manager at BAAINBw, comments: “Thanks to the excellent cooperation among all project participants, this extremely important procurement for the troops can now be set in motion. Furthermore, the procurement of the operational containers is a core element in the renewal of the maintenance equipment for the air defense missile units. In the future, the containers will ensure the weapon system’s maintainability worldwide.”

The PATRIOT system gained notoriety, among other things, during Operation DESERT STORM in 1991 for its role in defending against Iraqi ballistic missiles. In recent years, it has also been deployed during Bundeswehr missions on NATO’s eastern flank, for example in Poland and Slovakia, as well as in Turkey. Ongoing modernization efforts are intended to help maintain the PATRIOT’s operational capability in the coming years.
