For over seven years, the Foreign Protection Service of the Federal Police (PSA BPOL) has been supporting the Foreign Office in protecting German embassies in countries such as Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Yemen, Colombia, Lebanon, Libya, or Mali. The PSA BPOL is responsible for protecting the ambassador in those countries. The personal protectors accompany him or embassy delegates at official events, trips, or business travels.
Initially, the GSG 9 of the Federal Police was responsible for protecting the ambassadors in crisis areas. However, due to the deteriorating security situation in many countries, the GSG 9 would have been permanently tied up in many countries. Therefore, it was decided to establish its own department in 2008. In January 2009, the protection task was taken over by the PSA BPOL at the Embassy Kabul/Afghanistan. Subsequently, the remaining relevant embassies were also transferred to the responsibility of the PSA department.
