Truppenschau: DEVGRU in the Mix

DEVGRU, the Tier 1 special operations unit of the US Navy, gained prominence after the death of Osama Bin Laden. This article showcases the legendary group's equipment and training, including their preferred weapons, camouflage patterns, and vehicles.

DEVGRU, also called United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group (NSWDG), is the Tier 1 special operations unit of the US Navy. Ever since the death of Osama Bin Laden, anyone who doesn't live under a rock (excluding rocks in Afghanistan and Pakistan) knows this name. Mirage has kindly provided us with some interesting photos of this legendary group, which we present to you today. (All images can be clicked to enlarge.)

The standard camouflage of DEVGRU in Afghanistan is AOR1. The uniforms are from Crye Precision, while the plate carriers are mainly from London Bridge Trading. But Crye seems to be catching up here as well.

The preferred weapon of DEVGRU is the HK 416. For shorter range operations, you can also see more maneuverable options like the MP7, also from Heckler and Koch, in use. Thigh holsters are not commonly seen anymore, and when they are, they are usually models from Safariland, equipped with a SIG P226.

One of the advantages of belonging to a special operations unit is greater freedom in choosing equipment. So, besides the mentioned AOR1, commercially available camouflage patterns like Multicam and – rarely but still – Real Tree are worn. Furthermore, you see a lot of Crye Plate Carriers - JPC and CPC in use here.

The above photo is a convincing proof that even men who are already tough look better when posing in front of an explosion.

The DEVGRU Operators are trained in a variety of weapons and constantly train to maintain this competence. The Milkor MGL-140 provides massive firepower.

Interestingly, the classic plastic bottle seems to be more popular than a hydration carrier among the NSWDG circles.

In rugged terrain, besides motorcycles, larger special vehicles are available, here a vehicle from Kawasaki.

Once again, a big thank you to Mirage for providing us with the pictures. We could not determine the original source of the images. It appears to have originally been a digital photo album of a DEVGRU member who died in a major helicopter crash in Afghanistan.
