TRAINING: MilSim with Indras VR Víctrix

11/04/2021By Redaktion

Indra takes military training to the next level with the new version of the Víctrix Simulator. Soldiers immerse themselves in a virtual urban environment where they can prepare their missions in great detail and accuracy until perfect execution.

Six soldiers put on their Virtual Reality glasses in the simulation room. Immediately, they enter an urban tactical scenario with their own real weapons, simulating the mission they are preparing for.

They are connected with their colleagues in another base hundreds of kilometers away. The Víctrix system allows them to share a virtual scenario and train together. Both groups move through different streets until they meet at an agreed point to advance together, and they can interact with each other. A spokesperson from Indra stated, "the number of rooms that can participate in the exercise is practically unlimited, so there are no geographical barriers preventing the training."

The new Víctrix VR combines the use of 3D rendering and optical positioning technologies that can locate and track objects with millimeter precision and low latency. Each soldier wears sensors on their body, allowing the simulator to recognize their position and mimic virtually all of their movements. "They can move forward, crouch, take cover from snipers, or give signals to their comrades," the company explained.

Furthermore, the solution allows the operation to be repeated as many times as necessary until coordination is perfect. The units involved can analyze the risks they face, study different tactics, and anticipate the possible reactions of the enemy. "The system comes closest to real training, reaching a level of realism similar to a laser duel, but with the advantage of introducing all kinds of synthetic elements like tanks and helicopters and configuring other parameters such as the city where the action takes place, the number of enemies, the resources available to them, the level of resistance, the time of day, visibility conditions, etc.," said one developer.

This is next-generation training. It was developed to train soldiers for complex missions where hybrid warfare plays a role, making it very difficult to distinguish the enemy from the civilian population. In many cases, it is also an advanced opponent who takes advantage of the latest technologies and is highly trained.

The new Víctrix VR measures the performance of individual soldiers. Trainers can review every movement to correct any errors. The zenith view gives them a complete overview of the group's position to improve coordination. As the soldiers complete the exercises, their progress is documented. "Preparing soldiers for the future requires continuous measurement of their skills. No factor should be left to chance," emphasized the spokesperson.

Compared to the first version, the new Víctrix represents a significant technological leap, from projecting the scenario onto a screen to generating a virtual scenario where soldiers can move freely.

The first version of Víctrix is currently installed in more than 40 military bases of the Spanish armed forces. This experience has allowed Indra to develop a much more advanced solution, technologically more sophisticated than any other system on the market. The Víctrix system also allows training tailored to each training phase, taking soldiers from weapon handling training to preparation for the most demanding tactical operations.
