Simulating Tiger helicopters in France and Germany

10/28/2021By Redaktion

Together with its partner Thales, Rheinmetall will continue to maintain the helicopter simulators for training the crews of the Tiger combat helicopter. A corresponding order from the European armaments agency OCCAR was booked in summer 2021. The Integrated Service Support contract, which represents an order intake in the low double-digit million euro range for Rheinmetall, has a duration from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2025.

Under the Integrated Service Support contract now awarded, Rheinmetall and Thales will maintain a total of 20 modern Tiger simulators at the locations Le Luc, Fritzlar, Pau, and Phalsbourg, and provide service and maintenance services. The eight Full Mission Simulators (FMS) and twelve Cockpit Procedure Trainer (CPT) are used to train crews for the current configuration states of the aircraft in use: Tiger Helicopter Support and Destruction (HAD) Block 2 (France) and Support Helicopter Tiger Step 2 Crypto (Germany). The French armed forces and the Bundeswehr train their crews in a modern virtual environment, significantly contributing to full combat readiness and increased flight safety. The Tiger simulators are among the most powerful full mission simulators for combat helicopter crews worldwide. The Tiger combat helicopter is considered a very complex weapon system, the simulation of which places the highest demands on hardware and software.

Rheinmetall, Thales, and OCCAR continue a proven cooperation in the field of simulation and training with this order. In December 2014, the European Armaments Cooperation Organization OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation) commissioned the consortium "Tiger Aircrew Training Means" (ARGE TATM) to modernize the simulators that were already in use at that time. ARGE TATM is a joint venture of Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH and Thales AVS France SAS. This project was successfully completed at the end of 2019. Future obsolescence removals and further modernization projects for the Tiger, such as the integration of the current Maintenance Release, provide a good perspective for follow-up orders and further continuation of the cooperation.
