THURINGIA: The FN SCAR SC as the new medium-range weapon

This is the future of Thuringia's police force, which last year decided to adopt the FN HERSTAL SCAR SC as its new "medium-distance weapon" after a tender. What should such a weapon be capable of? "The medium-distance weapon serves as a compact shoulder-fired weapon system for medium operational distances. Its purpose is to establish the necessary tactical superiority of the police," says the definition. TEUTODEFENCE Germany won the Thuringian tender with FN HERSTAL's product. The Thuringian police will receive 1,200 SCAR SC in this exact configuration in 2023/24. SPARTANAT had the opportunity to test the weapon at the BEHÖRDENTAGE 2023.

The SCAR SC is usually known as a subcompact weapon optimized for personal protection with a unique stock and very short. That's why our first glance surprised us. But the Thuringian police did everything right: they optimized the weapon to their needs and to practicality - and no one intervened meaninglessly.

The result is a police weapon that has the folding stock of the SCAR L, making it appear longer, as well as the attachment at the front. It comes standard with a suppressor that allows the shooter to work without active hearing protection.

However, you can only see the front piece of the suppressor. What we find extremely exciting is the additional forend that completely covers it. This is the prototype and 3D printed. It has the advantage that no one can touch the hot "can" and burn themselves. The shooter can grip the handguard in a C-clamp style, the hand rests on an angled front grip from FAB Defense below, and a weapon light is mounted on the top.

The weapon light is a very solid INFORCE WMLx, which will send 800 lumens into the darkness of Thuringia. It is activated by the button at the end of the WMLx, which is pragmatically secured against unintentional operation with a loop. The M-LOK mounting slots on the forend would also be open for additional accessories.

For the optics, they chose a FALKE S DPOL in the Thuringian version – only authentic with the coat of arms of Thuringia (missing on the demonstration unit). A good 2 MOA red dot with sufficiently bright daylight settings and five night vision settings for use with night vision devices gets the shooter on target.

These are the variants that will be introduced: the SCAR SC is multi-caliber. The operational weapon has .300 BLK – here referred to as 7.62 x 35, but the barrel and caliber could be changed to 5.56. By the poster, you can see the rifle without the handguard.
