HANWHA Defense USA, Inc. has secured its first contract with the U.S. Army to deliver prototypes of the K9 mobile howitzer for the "Mobile Tactical Cannon" program. The Army will receive six K9MH systems, with an option for twelve more, to enhance artillery mobility and effectiveness amid modern battlefield challenges.
This is the first time HANWHA Defense USA, Inc. has received a contract from the U.S. Army: the contract is for the delivery of prototypes of the K9 mobile howitzer as part of the “Mobile Tactical Cannon” program. The Army will initially receive six K9MH systems, with an option for twelve more, to evaluate a more mobile artillery capability for units currently equipped with towed M777 howitzers.
If approved for deployment, the MTC would replace the towed M777 artillery systems in select U.S. Army formations. According to the Army, this transition would increase mobility, firepower, reliability, and survivability on a battlefield where artillery units are increasingly exposed to sensors and counterfire—a lesson learned from the current war in Ukraine.
