Tactical tip: Take cover!

In a practical demonstration in Germany, the effectiveness of using cars as cover during a shootout was tested with 5.56mm soft core ammunition. Results showed limited protection with the only safe zone being behind the engine and front tires. It is advised to position oneself low under the car for the smallest target presentation. Urban survival tactics are explored in this informative article.

Go quickly into cover! In the city, it is usually cars that provide this cover, and in movies, you often see people quickly ducking behind carts during a shootout to avoid getting hit. But how is it in reality? We had the opportunity in Germany at an event to practically see this in action. No, no one was hiding behind that van. It's probably better that way. It was shot with 5.56mm soft core ammunition - single shots and bursts. The windows are on us. There's no need to say anything about glass. Side mirrors also don't like being shot. Notice the hits on the pillars and the front windshield, which however did not shatter. Tires and rims also took a good beating. Now a look at the other side: the interior looks pretty devastated. The many holes show that there isn't much cover in a car, even though the area of the pillars at the bottom seemingly has no through-and-through shots. But ultimately you don't know what has flown under the car. The area behind the engine and front tires is the only interesting and protective zone. No penetration is visible under the LT 35 badge, the transversely mounted engine in the small truck has absorbed everything. So, there is cover here. Nowhere else. Close-up of the tire underneath: It has lost air, but no penetration is visible. Hence the recommended position for shooters: put your legs on the rim, lie on your back in the grass, presenting the smallest possible target. And you can observe or shoot back from under the car. On the other hand, the metal looks like this elsewhere. These are 5.56mm soft core ammunition exits.
